Review: Creperie le Triskel

Creperie le Triskel brings the Parisian flair to Melbourne’s laneway. It’s run by French people so you can be assured that the traditional Brittany crepes you’re eating are authentic and delicious. As you walk in, you’ll be greeted with a cheerful, “bonjour!” and the tantalising smell of batter hitting the hot plate.

Today for our lunch, dad and I decided to let out our Francophile sides (I admittedly am not a huge Francophile unless it comes to admiring people with French accents or films by Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Tati) and eat at the Creperie hidden on Hardware Lane.

The menu is extensive and they serve both savoury galettes and sweet crepes to cater for all cravings. Galette fillings include salmon, vegetables, béchamel sauce, and an array of different cheeses, with vegetarian and gluten free options available as well. Sweet crepes have toppings like the classic butter and sugar, nutella, salted caramel, apricot jam, fig and ginger jam, maple syrup, and a variety of fruits and nuts. There are also baguettes and sandwiches available on the menu, but you’d be crazy to eat anything but crepes at a creperie.

I decided to go with the L'Estivale (The Summer), which was filled with ricotta, chives and smoked salmon and folded over. The waitress said it was "a great choice", which I always love to hear.
The creperie uses equipment and tools imported all the way from France and the crepe is made to order right in front of you! The savoury crepes are made with buckwheat flour, which makes the crepes light and good for you! The servings appear quite large, but they are just the right size, leaving us happily satisfied.

To go with the crepes, there are hot and cold beverages to accompany your meal, including the ‘le bol café au lait’, a latte served in a bowl, which dad had had before and said it was a delicious and exotic experience, and French sirops (cordial).

Dad chose to go with the La Poulette (The Chicken, I think named for it's use of eggs), which had free range eggs, home made tomato sauce, and dad added turkey. Each crepe also came with a slice of baguette and home made salted butter which was magnifique!
The staff are incredibly friendly here and they encourage ordering in French, no matter how bad your accent is. You can hear them singing along to the French music being played and apparently, if you want to practice your French, they’d be happy to help you out so don’t be afraid to ask (in French preferably). The décor inside the café makes you feel like you’ve been transported to Paris. There is a large, detailed map of France adorning one wall and a bookshelf of French novels on the opposite side.

If you're on the run, stop by Le Triskel's little sister La Petite Creperie, a crepe stand, which can be found on the corner of Little Collins Street and Swanston, and grab a sweet crepe on the go.

Don’t be discouraged by Le Triskel’s motto: “arrogantly French”. There’s nothing arrogant about this creperie, which will make you feel like you’ve found home in the heart of Paris in Melbourne.
